Buchanan Family Stories From Elma Township
When most of our Buchanans moved west to Manitoba, some remained behind in Elma Township, Perth Coutny, Ontario. These were mostly descendants of William Buchanan and Ann Thompson, and of Charles Buchanan and Ann Porter. Some of the family of Andrew Buchanan and Mary Jane Booth remained in Elma until about 1900, when most of them moved to San Juan County, in Washington State.
Elma Township (like Townships in Ontario generally) is divided into Concessions (running in one direction) and Lots running at 90 degrees to the Concessions. You might ask, why not just give the compass directions? The answer if that they don't align with the compass directions as we know them. Click here to view a rough map of Elma, rotated about 45 degrees clockwise from the actual directions. (Listowel would be in the upper right-hand corner of your screen and the grid would run diagonally, if you attempted to line it up with an Atlas.)
A lengthy document containing the references to family members in The Elmanac can be found here. .
