In the past year, I have collected most of the Lidgett family history of James and Eliza Lidgett - Ernie's grandparents. Robert a,cousin from England sent me a copy of James's parents marriage certificate that she obtained from the House of Records in Yorks. We have the James and Eliza's original marriage certificate in our family Bible. The only link I'm missing is Alfred and Peggy Hill's family tree. Peggy was Fred Lidgett's daughter from his first marriage (in England). So far, all my information is only on paper and it's my winter project to get it on the computer. Thanks for any help you could give me.

THE LIDGETT FAMILY
by Marion Lidgett
In June, 1927, the Lidgett family, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. James Lidgett, their son, Fred (who was a widower with an infant daughter, Peggy), Jim, Albert, Art, Jack, Kate, and a niece, Ivy [on 12 Dec 1933 Ivy Firth married Andrew A. Olson, son of Andrew G. Olson], immigrated to Canada from England and decided to come to Wetaskiwin. They had a niece and nephew, Mr. and Mrs. P. Hoyle, who had a farm there.
They were met at the station by a man working for the Soldier Settlement Board. He sold them the NWI/4-32-45-26-W4, known as the Lake farm. He took them twenty miles by wagon over rough roads with lots of mosquitoes. Mrs. Lidgett became very sick from their bites.
At first everything was strange and difficult. Their furniture and clothes had gone astray in shipment but at last everything arrived and they got settled. The older boys bad to work on other farms to learn the Canadian way of farming. Jack walked a mile and a half to Ernest Park school.
The next year, their oldest daughter, Julia, arrived with her husband, Norman Jackson, and three children and started farming two miles away. Kate went to work in Red Deer where she married a railroad man, Negly Parks. They now have three sons.
Times were very hard on the farm. In winter the boys had to work in the lumber camps for a pair of new overalls, and five dollars a month. Their mother knit their socks and mitts.
Albert married Marion Ing, a girl who was hired to help Mrs. Lidgett. They have three children: Rose married Jim Sehlin from Millet district and has three daughters and lives in Kamloops, D.C.; Ernie, married to Donna Wolters from east of Wetaskiwin, they have three boys and live in Edmonton; Teddy, single, lives in Edmonton. These children all went to Ernest Park school.
Ivy married a local man, Andrew Olson. She died leaving two sons. Mr. Olson passed away in December, 1972,
The other boys, went out to work. Jim married and went to Vancouver to work in the steel works. He has one step-daughter.
Art married a local girl, Evelyn Sjorlund. They lived in the Rapid Creek district for a while and then they moved to Red Deer.
When World War II broke out, Fred, Albert, and Jack joined the Army. This made their parents very sad as they had lost their oldest son, Tom, in the first World War.
Mr. Lidgett tried to keep the farm going with the help of a young ex-soldier, Alfred Hill, who later married Peggy. She died in 1969 leaving a family of eight boys. They resided in Calgary.
When their sons returned home, Albert remained on the farm. Fred married in England and brought his wife and two children home. He bought a farm west of Ponoka, where he still lives.
Jack married a widow, Mary Maitland, and lives in Edmonton. She had three children. George Wollard, a boy who lived with the family for seven years, joined the Navy. He now lives in the U.S.A.
In 1951 Albert sold the farm and moved his family and the old folks to Wetaskiwin. Mr. and Mrs. Lidgett celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in September, 1951.
Mrs. Lidgett passed away in 1956. Mr. Lidgett lived to the ripe old age of 96 years when he passed away in 1967. Albert died in June, 1972.

Andrew A. Olson was the son of Andrew G. Olson. - He bought the SW11-46-26-W4 in 1922. After eleven years of bachelorhood he married Ivy Firth on December 12, 1933, who made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lidgett in the Ernest Park area. Ivy passed away September 1, 1958, after having a bad heart condition for some time. Andrew sold the farm in 1960 to Gordon Krause and went into Wetaskiwin to live with his son, Leonard. Later he moved to Peace Hills home. After becoming ill, he was moved to Green Acres Nursing Home where he passed away in December, 1972.
They had two sons, Stanley and Leonard. Stanley is employed as a gas fitter and lives in Leduc, In July, 1958, he married Dolores Maygard of the Gwynne arm They have one daughter and three sons. Leonard is employed with Brekke Glass. He married Marlene White, lives in Wetaskiwin and they have three daughters and one son.
His father, Andrew G. Olson had two brothers in the Lone Ridge/Westerose area, Ole and Peter. They came from Alvdalen, Brunsberg, Sweden by way of Stanchfield, Minnesota, where they farmed for about 15 years. They settled in the area west of Wetaskiwin, Alberta in 1900-1903. (From history of the Olaf G. and Peter G. Olson families in "Freeway West".)
[It was the Andrew G. Olson family that Dorothy Ing worked for as a young girl, prior to her marriage to George Buchanan. Andrew G. Olson died while Dorothy was working for him. Andrew appears to have been the first of the Olsons to move to Canada.]Surname First name(s) District Vol Page

I remember when Walter and Ann, Vi and Ray, Grandma and Grandpa, and Pearl and Floyd Stenseth all lived in the Norbuck area. Once we drove with horse and wagon past a long stretch of burning brush. This left an impression on me.
We always enjoyed visiting Walter and Anne. They were always fun to be with. Walter would invite us to tag along as he did the farm chores, and Anne always had cake, cookies or pie for us to enjoy. She loved to gently tease us children, and we loved it. I stayed with them for a few weeks about 1960. I had bought a 1948 Plymouth and the engine bearings failed the first time I used it. With Walter's help, I borrowed a gadget called a McGee Crankshaft Hone from the Shave family and used it to try to fix my engine. When this failed, he found a buyer for my (now useless) car, Anton Royakkers. I helped-out when Walter and Anne were building the new house on the farm. After Glennie's death they lost their optimism. They moved into Breton. Both of them had health problems.

Anne came from a large family (names are given in no particular order):
Peter, Steve, Pauline (George Bullock), Marie, Anne (Walter Ing), Darren (Shelley), Kevin, Eddie (Helen), Charlene (Dana Cox), JennyJohn and Bunny Melnyk's daughter Janet's husband's name is Mick.
Charlene's mom Helen remarried shortly before Donnie Ing's death.
Donnie provided a home for Shirley Gow, who had no family in Alberta. The nature of their relationship has not been defined.
At 6:35 on Tuesday April 24, my mother, Dorothy Buchanan, called to say that Donnie had ben found dead in his home at 2:00. He had been suffering from leukemia and kidney failure. He had developed lengthy nose bleeds and declined an offer of a ride to the hospital, saying that he was going to see the doctor on Tuesday, but died before then.
Donnie had a hard life. He was born crippled and would slide himself across the floor, wheelchair-style. Doctors were unable to help, but a chiropractor was able to give him the use of his legs. He limped, but could walk quite well. He enjoyed snowmobiling with Lloyd Buchanan and others.

This young man's death was a devastating blow to his parents. It also cost the
survival of the Ing name. His grave number appears to be L1-46

[Louisa was found living elsewhere, working as a domestic servant.]Carlton Rood is a misspelling for Carleton Rode. It is east and little south of Attleborough.
Carleton Rode is about 13 miles southwest of Norwich. The parish church is All Saints: Depwade 1560 Carleton Rode [All Saints] Depwade DistrictHe came from Attelborough, Norfolk, as according to Jessie Evans Anderson and her mother, the Wrights came from there, and he died in Paddington, London. He is believed to be buried in Mill Hill Cemetery, Edgware, London. They lived in Paddington, in Bristol Mews. He worked as a coal deliveryman. The horses were kept in the stables under the apartments. When they switched to trucks, these stables became garages for the trucks. Two years after Louisa and Dorothy visited there, the mews were torn down and the area converted into a playground.

"Grandpa Wright seemed short to me, with a spiky greying moustache, and he walked with a limp. My mother said he had a 'withered leg' - but I have since wondered if perhaps it was an arthritic hip such as she developed in her later years. On our arrival he always produced a jam jar in which were lots of farthings which he had collected since our previous visit (there were four of these to an old penny and one old penny is less than half of a present-day one pence piece!). With wages being so low in those days this must have represented quite a sacrifice, and although I can't say that as small children we appreciated all that was involved, we certainly eagerly looked forward to the ritual when he divided them equally between Violet and me and we would hurry off to the dingy little sweetshop 'round the corner' and would take ages making our purchases with the precious farthings.
- Jessie Evans AndersonSamuel was a Baptist and Charlotte was an Anglican. The children were brought up as Anglicans, at least Louisa was. Charlotte's daughter Jessie and husband Wilfred were very active members of the Plymouth Brethren.
Jessie Evans Anderson writes: "Grandpa Wright had died in the 1930s in St.Mary's Hospital, Paddington [London] and was buried in Mill Hill Cemetery, Edgware"

http://www2.westminster.gov.uk/environment/cemetries/Mill-Hill-Cemetery.cfmHi Bill,
Thanks for getting in touch. I am sorry for the delay in replying but I am disabled and losing the use of my hands which makes typing difficult and often impossible.
Thank you for the very interesting information that you sent me about your ancestors, it is the personal recollections that bring people alive. Unfortunately, at the moment I cannot help you. I have very little information on my WRIGHT line at present. All I know is that my Great Grandmother was Ada Catherine WRIGHT, born about 1867 in Paddington and her father's name was John. He was a Private in the Coldstream Guards. Ada married Archibald John Hendry on the 2 April 1890 at Paddington Register Office. They had six children that I know of Annie, Nell, Archibald John (my Grandfather), George Alfred, Edward and we believe their was another son whose name was possibly William but we have yet to confirm it. Ada is proving to be a rather persistent brick wall as I have not been able to find her birth certificate or find her in the early censuses.
I'm sorry I cannot help you at the moment but I will keep your details on file and if I come across anything in my research that I think will be of use to you, I will let you know.
Good luck with your research. Take care.

On the 7th February, 1853, a general Court Leet of the Manor of Stanmore was held at the Abercorn Arms. This was presided over by John Froggatt, the Steward of the Manor, who was assisted by a duly sworn jury of twelve men, headed by a foreman. A Court Leet, as some readers may know, was the Court or Parliament of the Manor, at which the manorial matters were dealt with by or on behalf of the Lord of the Manor and those residing within its bounds, and this particular Court is of some historical interest, apart from its importance to the Stanmore Cricket Club, in that it is believed to be the last Court of its kind held in the county of Middlesex.
The Abercorn Arms on the hill, the Crown in the later Church Road, and the Vine were licensed in 1803. (Footnote 74) It was at the Abercorn Arms that the Prince Regent met Louis XVIII of France in 1814, after the king had ended his years of exile at Hartwell (Bucks.). (Footnote 75) All three of the inns recorded in 1803 survived in 1971, although the Abercorn Arms, still so called in 1863, had been temporarily renamed the Royal hotel by 1865.

Grandma Wright was short and plump and always wore a high-necked grey blouse and black ankle-length skirt - as was the fashion of the day! Her hair was brown and long, and swept up at the back and fastened in a 'bunch' above her forehead.
In later years she was blind and pretty much an invalid. She died abt 1940 in Edgware General Hospital.Jessie Evans wrote in Thurs Jan 28, 1941
"It has been quite a while since I wrote you with news of Grandma's death.""Not long after the start of the war she was taken ill and entered Edgware General Hospital, where she died about 1941 and was buried with Grandpa. I don't remember her exact age but think she was well into her eighties at that time." - Jessie Evans Anderson

He is shown in the same household as Charlotte.Sam was a gunner in WWI, maintaining his post during an exceptionally heavy bombardment and was severely shell shocked. Jessie recalled visiting him as a child. She said that he would not carry on a conversation, but would just stare into the fire, apparently reliving old memories that were more vivid than his present surroundings. He disappeared about 1930 and no one knows what became of him. It was thought by some members of the family that he might have gone to South Africa.

George Ing 42 Staines Middlesex Wood Green Navvy Labourer
Martha Ing 38 W Malyern Middlesex Wood Green Launderess
Ada Ing 3 Wood Green Midlx Middlesex Wood GreenBorn in Paddington, London, Middlesex, England according to her obituary.
Forsbury is spelled Forsberry on her death certificate.
Her daughter Marian worked in a laundry and had died of tuberculosis, and it was felt that Canada would be a healthier place to live. Her sons Jim and Dick were already there and recommended it highly. Jim and Dick sold their oxen to get enough money to bring Ada and Grandma (Martha) over from England.
She came to Canada about 1907 (Millicent Ing was about 1 year old at the time), living first in Rainy River district, New Ontario. She came to Kirriemuir, Alberta in 1912, then with her son at Cooking Lake, then in 1931 [Violet Suter says 1932] with the Suters at Carrot Creek and since 1941 at St. Joseph's hospital in Edmonton until her death.Dorothy Ing Buchanan remembers: "Grandma Ing lived with us (i.e. with Richard and Louisa's family) about 10 years, starting in Cooking Lake. When we moved to Breton in 1934 she lived with Uncle Walter and Aunt Ada (Suter) for a short time at Carrot Creek, AB. Then she moved into the St. Joseph Hospital in Edmonton. She was easy to get along with, enjoyed knitting. She still did her own mending until she was very old. She had excellent eyesight. She could spot an airplane before any of us."

Thanks for your reply.
According to the 1881 and 1901 censuses, my great-grandfather Thomas George Ing was born in Paddington. London about 1835-1836. All I know about his father is that his name is given on TG's marriage certificate as "Robert Ing" and his " Rank or profession" is "deceased". Your Robert would be too young to be my Thomas' father, but each piece of the puzzle helps.
The fact that your Robert's father is also named Thomas is interesting. My Thomas' sisters are named Emily, Mary and Priscilla.

The Origin of the HING, ING or INGE name.
We all grow up listening to stories of the past. One story in my family was how the HING's were once Lords of the Manor of Edlesborough Buckinghamshire. How true is this assertion, was it handed down from generation to generation and based on fact or is it just wishful thinking?
Auntie Doris is the oldest living member of the Hing's of Cheddington Buckinghamshire, and she had a newspaper cutting of 1925, which made the Hing or Ing claim on Edlesborough. The cutting is of Great Great Uncle William Hing's Diamond Wedding. The article finishes "His attachment for this district is not surprising when it is remembered that the family of Ing or Hing has lived in this district since Saxon times and that the manor of Edlesborough was once owned in its Saxon days by a member of the Ing family".
Contact with Eve McLaughlin (author of the McLaughlin Guides for family historians and Secretary of Buckinghamshire Genealogical Society) revealed that the Ing name does in fact date back to Saxon times. She wrote " 'Ing' is the Saxon term for a small clan or extended household group. So usually, you get names like God'ing the household of Goda; Walsingham the settlement of the household of Walsa; so just 'Ing' should apply to 'that tribe/household' implying that they were the first of these odd foreign folk who settled on old British territory (like the Germans were 'Deutsche' = THE people). So the Ings ought to be among the original Saxons in a particular area - and to have retained a strong enough image to keep the name even when other 'ings' turned up"
I now have over 1,000 relatives listed dating back to 1570. The male line however I only have back to 1763 when William Inge was born. He married Mary Janes 16 Nov 1783 and they moved to Slapton, Buckinghamshire to have their son William Baptised 15 July 1787.
So what about being lords of the manor of Eddlesborough? A possible parent (Thomas Ing) and grandparent (William Ing) of William Inge I've found in the Eaton Bray, Billington and Eddlesbourough areas but this I have yet to confirm.
The stronghold for the ING name in Buckinghamshire was near the Oxfordshire border in and around Long Crendon and Haddenham. Here ING remains dominant but interestingly a branch that migrated to Radnage and Stokenchurch began to introduce an 'H' early in the 1800's in some cases, while others retained ING up to the present day. The 'H' appears to have been added in the 1850's to the Slapton ING's.
The inclusion of an 'E' at the end occurs only in William ING(E)'s case and may suggest a link to the INGE's of the 11th and 12th Century as I have found a reference that a Thomas Inge gave land to Dunstable Monastery in 11th Century and that William Inge held significant land in Redbourn in the 12th Century. Unfortunately the links between the Land owning Inge's and William of 1763 is going to be difficult to establish.
Alternatively there was a William INGE baptised in 1763 near Canterbury, and maybe William was an outsider.
Personally I would like to believe a direct link to the 11th and 12th Century INGE's. Their presence was certainly strong where the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire borders meet.
I hope to present more information on a website soon.Hi Paul (and other ING researchers)
This is from a library bound pamphlet in Chesham library listing inmates of Aylesbury Gaol in the 1870s who came from Chesham. The complete set is in the Local Records Centre in Aylesbury Ref Library, with photos.
William ING:
Born Long Crendon c1860. C of E. Son of Thomas ING, ploughman. In 1873 was a labourer living in Amy Lane Chesham.
On 23 April 1873, he was received into Aylesbury Gaol, having been sentenced to 1 months hard labour (plus 4 years in Reformatory) for stealing tobacco.
On 23 May he was removed to Bengeo Reformatory, Ware, Herts.
In 1881, he was an unmarried labourer living in Waterside Chesham with his widowed mother and two sisters.
Mary Ann ING:
Born in Whelpley Hill c 1859. C of E. Dau of Thomas ING, shepherd. She was working as a straw plaiter in Chesham in 1873. It was noted she had a speech impediment.
She was received into Aylesbury Gaol on 9 April 1873. Sentenced to 1 months hard labour for stealing 3 shirts. Sentenced to 4 years in a Reformatory and on 8 May was sent to Red Lodge Reformatory in Bristol.
Hope this is of interest
Judith YoungCheshamco-owner Bucks ListThey certainly are, pretty generally for Bucks - the Crendon Ings were an offshoot of the main line, needlemakers for a while there, until the trade died out in the village (or transferred to Redditch); So, those remaining needed to look round for alternative employment; the railways were a good bet, well paid too. and maybe, they went to Swindon with the railway workshops.
You can see fine Long Crendon pictures on the BGS website and download them as well. We have a really useful History of Long Crendon in our bookshop, which is about people rather than church architecture.

According to a very useful publication called Buckinghamshire Parish Register transcripts and IGI Lists, the PRs for Oakley exist from 1604 -1900. The IGI have extracts of baptisms and marriages from 1726 to 1881, so you should be able to search online at www. familysearch.org . Burials have
been transcribed from 1813 to 1840. You will find a copy of transcripts in the CBS in Aylesbury, and in the SOG Library, in London - but as this is rather a long way for you to go, you may need help in looking at these!
Hope this is useful

Bucks ListOakley registers are at the Aylesbury Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. Ings will almost certainly lead you back to Long Crendon (close to Oakley) first, then probably to Haddenham.

Hello Bill
I have found the death of a Robert Ing in 1837online - December quarter 1853 in Marylebone - the reference is 1a 306.
Also found Ruth Ing died in in December quarter 1855 in Marylebone - the reference is very difficult to read but I think it is 1a 819 but couldn't be sure.
That would be about right as the children were living in the civil parish of St Marylebone in the 1861 census.
I cannot at this stage be sure that Robert is one of our Ings but would think it is very likely that he was John's brother.
I enclose a copy of our Ing Family Tree on a Word document and hope you can pick it up ok. Please let me know. I have also given a site address to look at pictures of Chesham from the Chesham Museum which has recently been started.
I will also look out my rough notes from the County Library where I noted all the Ings but they are put away in a file and may take me a couple of days to locate. I may find some information there. When I last went to the County Library I went down into the archive section looking for my own family I was allowed to handle some of the actual registers from the local churches which dated back to the times of Elizabeth the first. They are very delicate and had to be placed on foam cushions for protection.
I do hope we can find a connection.

Hello John
I think I have your Elizabeth Ing. Thomas(1825) and Sarah Ing (was Sarah Payne) had a four children baptised on 17 6 1855 in Chesham St Mary's Church - Sarah, Elizabeth (1853), George(b 1850) and Robert (b 1849).
There were also other children
Mary Anne (1846) Emma (1857) Sarah Jane (1859) and William (1862).
Thomas and Sarah were married at St Mary's Chesham on 7 April 1844 Thomas 20 described as Labourer of Grove Farm (near Ley Hill) and his father John Ing -Labourer. Sarah 19 of Pednormead End daughter of John Payne Labourer. Thomas had a least one sister - Mary Ing (b abt 1819) married William Holiman 1839).
George(1850) is my husband's ggrandfather. I have got back to Thomas's father John born abt 1791 -died 1875 in Chesham
but am having difficulty finding his marriage. My husband is Robert Ing of Chesham.
Most of my research has been on George and his descendents but if you want me to do any looking up I am in Chesham and will gladly do so as I don't know where you are and you may not be able to get to Chesham Library. I also go to Aylesbury where they have BMD for all the country. I will gladly pass my info to you if you want it.

Regards Gwen Ing

In the 1881 census there are no Ings in London born in 1805-1825. This seems improbable.
