Victor E. Sjorlund History
- submitted by Victor (Buster) Sjorlund
Victor E. Sjorlund was born in Mora, Minn. U.S.A., to Andrew and Martha Sjorlund on October 26, 1884. He came to Wetaskiwin with his parents, brother and. sisters in April 1902.
They stayed with friends and slept in tents until the men could build a shelter. This they did in the area of the flour mill near the railroad track.
They lived here until July. By this time they had filed on their homesteads. This land was located about twenty miles west of Wetaskiwin. Victor homesteaded on the SW 20-46-26. Victor's dad and brother took homesteads directly east of him. He stayed with his folks for a few years while getting some land cleared and buildings built.
Money was quite hard to come by in those days, so Victor, his brother and other relatives would go out working in the mills hauling lumber, etc. in the winter time.
On Oct. 28, 1911, he married Millie Armstrong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. O. Armstrong of Brightview. The first year of their married life was spent on SE of 30, owned by Mr. Westin, as Victor did not have his barn built. They moved to their own farm the following year. Victor and Millie were very community minded and willing to lend a helping hand any time.
They had 10 children, namely: Lena, Mrs. Carl Brown, in Wetaskiwin; Victor Harold (Buster), Falun; Evelyn, Mrs. Art Lidgett, Red Deer; Martha, Mrs. Martha Hardy, Edmonton; Ruth, Mrs. Albert Milne, Olds; Vivian, Mrs. John Kaiser, Wetaskiwin; Rosie, Mrs. Ed. Bailer, Ponoka; Myrtle, Mrs. Henry Herchuk, Edmonton; Pearl, Mrs. Ernie Bailer, Edmonton; Ethel, Mrs. Merton Kuefler, High Prairie. They attended the Rapid Creek School which was three and a half miles from their home. In the winter they went by 'horse and cutter and in summer by horse and buggy.
Much more on the Sjorlands can be found in 'Freeway West":

They have three sons.

I am descendant of Robert Carson of Fort Coulonge, Mansfield township, Pontiac County, Quebec. Is this near English River Area? Robert married Margaret Frost and one of their children was Thomas Carson born about 1877 at Fort Coulonge, Mansfield township, Pontiac County, Quebec. Thomas married Agnes Flood. They had several children, one of whom is my grandfather Cleve Carson. No the Pontiac area is not part of the English River Area. It is more around Ottawa/Hull while the English River Area is around Chateauguay, Quebec (south of Montreal). I found your relatives in the 1881 Quebec Census. Have attached:
