Genealogy Podcasts
Podcasts are Personal On-Demand BroadCASTS. They are basically Internet radio broadcasts that you can listen to online using your computer, or you can download the MP3 files and listen to them while you are off-line. Once you have downloaded them, you can copy them to an MP3 player or a CD for your car or home stereo. Or just listen to them on your computer while you are off-line. One beautiful thing about podcasts is that you are not tied into someone's broadcast schedule. You choose the time and place that you listen to them. If you listen using Windows Media Player or similar music software, you can skip any parts you aren't interested in or backup and listen to interesting parts more than once.
To Download a podcast, right-click on its link and choose "Save Target As". (The file name will usually end in .MP3)
To Subscribe to a podcast use free software such as Apple's iTunes or MyPodder, and list the podcasts that you want to receive. Information on how to subscribe is usually available on the individual podcast sites. I prefer the portable "podcast catcher" MyPodder at http://www.podcastready.com/site4/index.php.
My Favorite Family History
Podcasts
The Genealogy Guys - George G. Morgan and Drew Smith Two
popular genealogy conference speakers combine their talents in
about 80 weekly one-hour podcasts that are entertaining and very
informative. I have personally used some of the tips and websites
they recommend, with good results. http://genealogyguys.com To
Download, right-click on the POD icon and choose Save Target
As/Save Link As.
Relatively Speaking - KSL Radio genealogy podcast. Each week there are two one-hour podcasts, which cover a 2-hour phone-in program of genealogy helps and tips. Genealogist Mary Slawson of the Human Family Project answers research questions received by telephone and email. This one is not to be missed, but skip the long commercials if you can. http://www.ksl.com/?sid=640045
Genealogy Gems Podcast - An excellent series of podcasts from Lisa Cooke with useful suggestions than everyone can use. http://genealogygemspodcast.com The accompanying website is: http://genealogygems.tv/
Dear Myrtle's Family History Hour - New episodes are added periodically, and her archives are a treasure. Dear Myrtle is probably the world's first genealogy podcaster, and still "in the business". A popular genealogy speaker and author, whose site includes much more than the podcasts. http://www.dearmyrtle.com/listen.htm
Family Roots Radio - ceased creating new episodes on 7 May 2007. Professional genealogist Kory L. Meyerink and his guests, including some of the biggest names in genealogy publishing. He also has excellent "how-to" tips. This weekly one-hour podcast is one of the very best. http://familyrootsradio.com/
Genealogy On Demand - Shamele Jordon has a style I like, it is too bad she stopped adding new episodes. These are 15 short programs of maybe 15 minutes each. http://genealogyondemand.wordpress.com/
The Family History Minute -
Brian Mickelson's 9 short episodes (under 10 minutes) are
highly-motivational family history podcasts.

Most of his podcasts require Apple Quicktime Player (free) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download
Irish Roots Cafe - The first six of these were originally recorded on tape in the 1980s. There are weekly broadcasts, strongly oriented to Irish culture. If you are "hooked" on Irish genealogy, check them, out. http://www.irishroots.com
Steven Kapp Perry interviews Irene Johnson of the Family History Library (and the "Ancestors" TV broadcasts). In this interview, Irene talks about genealogy and tells about her own family research in Ukraine. http://skperry.blogmatrix.com/2005/05.21/0000/ or click this link to download the file if you have high-speed internet access. http://skperry.blogmatrix.com/2005/05.21/0000/cs-irenejohnson.mp3
